DESCRIPTION
The tour starts heading north and to the cosmopolitan Fiscardo, a seaside village, which still stands as a model of the old port, untouched after the great earthquake of 1953.
Leaving Fiscardo we will visit the lovely village of Assos. Assos nestles, at the base of a hill on a small peninsula. The village is almost hidden amidst thick pine forest, ringed by tall cypress trees and overlooked by a ruined 16th-century castle built high on the peninsula by the Venetians who then governed the island.
Leaving Assos and following the coastline you will have the chance to stop above Myrtos Beach for photos.
Next stop is another beautiful location , Agia Efimia - a very pretty fishing village with a number of traditional Greek waterside cafes and tavernas. Continuing we will have the chance to visit two of the most idyllic places with first fist the subterranean lake of Melissani. Here you will descend a manmade tunnel to the water's edge where you will board a small rowboat for a scenic cruise around the majestic cavern, which once yielded ancient relics from a former Minoan culture, including figures of the god Pan and several nymphs. View dramatic stalactites and stalagmites that border its aquamarine waters. Take in the awe-inspiring beauty that surrounds you as shafts of sunlight filter from above, enhancing the vibrant colors of the glistening lake.
Continue your journey to majestic Drogarati Cave, located nearly 200 feet below the surface. Discovered 300 years ago when an earthquake exposed the entrance, this spectacular two million-year-old cavern features stunning rock formations (enhanced by hidden lighting) and a magnificent hall called "Sala of Apotheosis". Passing through the Mount Ainos you will visit the famous monastery of St Gerasimos, the patron saint of Kefalonia and marvel the solid silver casket containing his remains. Next to the Monastery you will visit the Robola Winery and gain insight into the production methods of the famous and rare Robola wine made of a local selection of grapes, which comes in red, white and sweet Muscat.
