DESCRIPTION

Commence a scenic island drive through olive groves, vineyards and thick cypress glades. The tour starts following the beautiful sea side road of Fanari with a photo stop at the location of Katavothres and the sink holes, a geological phenomenon first observed in 1835 and the Lighthouse. We continue to the lovely village of Assos, one of the most beautiful villages of Kefalonia. Colorful houses, blooming flowers and charming chapels give to this lovely settlement a romantic and traditional character. The most important monument in the village is the Castle of Assos, built from the Venetians during the 16th century. Next stop is the cosmopolitan Fiscardo, a seaside village, which still stands as a model of the old port, untouched after the great earthquake of 1953. Narrow streets, paved paths, houses painted in salmon, pink and yellow with red tiled roofs make this place like a fairytale landscape. At the harbor there are many boutiques, café and restaurants served delicious dishes. Leaving Fiscardo and after a photo stop at the spectacular Myrtos Beach, we will meet another beautiful location surrounded by sea and fir tree cloaked mountains, Agia Efimia - a very pretty fishing village with a number of traditional Greek waterside cafes, tavernas and a good selection of shops. Continuing we will have the chance to visit two of the most idyllic places, the subterranean lake of Melissani, where small boats carrying visitors to admire the spectacular sight of the stalactites and the changing kaleidoscopic colors of the water and Drogarati Cave, discovered 300 years ago when an earthquake exposed the entrance, this spectacular two million-year-old cavern features stunning rock formations (enhanced by hidden lighting) and a magnificent hall called "Sala of Apotheosis". Passing through the Mount Aenos and arrived in the area of Omala Valley we will enter the largest religious monument in Kefalonia having been established in 1560 by St. Gerasimos, the patron saint of the island. The Omala Valley is the island’s primary wine-region, and most vineyards and wineries are clustered around St. Gerasimos Monastery. You cannot pass from Kefalonia without tasting a glass of the famous local wine at the Robola Winery, located in this area. The Robola, produced exclusively in Kefalonia is a white wine with special lemon color, acidity in the flavor and aroma of citrus fruits, usually is consumed two years after its production.

PLEASE NOTE:
We recommend that you bring sun cream and a sun hat as at times it can get extremely hot. Please wear comfortable footwear for this excursion as it involves some walking on uneven ground. Passengers must negotiate a number of steps at the lake and be able to enter and exit the boats without assistance. Visitors to Drogarati Cave must negotiate approximately 150 steep steps carved out of cave rock. The steps can be wet and slick. Not recommended for passengers with limited mobility and/or who suffer from claustrophobia. The cave is over 200 feet below ground and the temperature is approximately, 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Those wishing to enter the monastery must dress conservatively; shorts are not permitted. Flash photography prohibited.
